Celebrating New York City’s Public Health Heroes
Physician and clinician team burnout in New York City-the most densely populated, diverse and medically complex urban environment in the U.S.-is a crisis and has profound and far reaching consequences, both immediate and long-term. It’s impacts are not limited to the healthcare workforce, but impacts every household and family in our city, impacting health equity, our economic stability and community trust in the system of public health.
Mitigating physician and clinician team burnout is not only a moral imperative but a public health necessity, as unchecked burnout leads to higher rates of medical errors, reduced quality of care, and premature physician attrition from the workforce. Burnout erodes clinician empathy for patients, impairs decision-making, and increases depression and suicide risk among clinicians, creating a ripple effect that diminishes patient trust, continuity of care, and compromises overall health outcomes. If left unaddressed, our system of public health will face escalating physician and clinician team shortages, longer wait times, decreased access to care and increased gaps in care, particularly chronic and critical care—especially in underserved communities—and increased healthcare costs due to inefficiencies, turnover, and preventable disease and adverse events. Ultimately, failing to act threatens both the sustainability of the healthcare workforce and the health security of the City of New York. These committed health professionals have made the people of the City of New York their highest priority, and with these celebrations the community prioritizes them.

Physicians and clinicians are the quiet heroes of civil society, standing at the intersection of medical science, compassion, and service, often sacrificing personal well-being to protect the health of the people of our community. They are the cornerstone and foundation of our public health system, translating medical knowledge into lifesaving care, safeguarding communities against disease, and responding to crises with resilience and courage. Beyond treating illness, they uphold the social contract by promoting wellness, advocating for vulnerable populations, and serving as trusted stewards of public health truth in an age of misinformation. Without their dedication, expertise, and moral commitment, the very framework of public health—prevention, access, equity, and trust—would collapse, leaving society immeasurably more fragile.
